Molecular Communications

Traditional wireless communication systems embed their messages into electro-magnetic waves. This approach is well suited for typical macroscale applications such as mobile communications and sensor networks with device sizes on the order of centimeters to meters. However, recent advances in biology, nanotechnology and medicine have created the need for communication between devices with sizes on the order of tens of nanometers to tens of micrometers. This has motivated research in recent years in the new field of Molecular Communications (MC).
Together with different cooperation partners from the faculties of Engineering, Medicine and Science, we work on the development of nano/microscale communication systems based on concepts found in nature. Work is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft and the Emerging Fields Initiative of FAU.
